Judd Gregg Withdraws
Republican Sen. Judd Gregg slipped under the radar screen and without the benefit of telling Barack Obama in advance, he bails! When Gregg accepted the psot of Commerce Secretary I thought I rather strange; however, the withdrawal is more than weird. Why didn't Gregg notify Obama in advance? Oh I know, it's called politics. No big deal other than it takes away the weekend spotlight on the Stimulus Bill excitement.
Gregg said in part, "We are functioning from a different set of views on many critical items of policy" Well duh! And Gregg didn't know that going in? He went on to add, "Obviously, the president requires a team that is fully supportive of all his initiatives." Another DUH!
Gregg would have been the third Republican to join the Democratic administration, following Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. The third-term Republican and leading fiscal conservative once voted to abolish the Commerce Department. Would have been, but is no mas!
"I want to thank the president for nominating me to serve in his Cabinet as secretary of commerce. This was a great honor, and I had felt that I could bring some views and ideas that would assist him in governing during this difficult time. I especially admire his willingness to reach across the aisle," he said in a statement.
More from his bailing out comments, "It has become apparent during this process that this will not work for me as I have found that on issues such as the stimulus package and the census there are irresolvable conflicts for me. Prior to accepting this post, we had discussed these and other potential differences, but unfortunately we did not adequately focus on these concerns. We are functioning from a different set of views on many critical items of policy." Who's the WE here? You're a grown man Judd.
You just have to love politics! Or hate politics. Maybe both? :-)
